Plot[]

Jon Arbuckle is a lonely cartoonist, whose only companions are his elderly neighbor, Herb, and his crush, veterinarian Liz Wilson. Across town, a chef in an Italian restaurant notices a newborn cat without any parents. The restaurant takes the cat in, but immediately begins causing problems for them. The restaurant almost goes bankrupt, and the chef sells the cat to a pet store.

Jon goes to visit Herb, and watches his cat, Nermal, do some things, when Jon laments how he wished he had a pet as a child. Herb, out of sympathy, gives Jon some of his retirement funds to buy him a pet. At the pet store, Jon sees the cat, buying him and calling him Garfield.

Five years have passed, and Jon still has a crush on Liz. Garfield is now a cynical and lazy house cat, still feasting on Italian food. One of Jon's old college roommates, Lyman, comes to stay for a few days, bringing along his dog, Odie. Garfield does not take too kindly to Odie being in the house, and tries to get him and Lyman to leave, to Jon's dismay. Eventually, Lyman is arrested for theft, and he leaves Odie in Jon's care.

After a series of misadventures, Jon sends Garfield out to get the paper. Sick of his daily routine, Garfield decides to keep on walking. Jon sends Odie to find Garfield, but then is alone again. After not finding Garfield and Odie, Jon decides to put a lost pets ad in the newspaper, but fails miserably.

Jon calls Liz and they go on the hunt. Meanwhile, Odie is taken in by an abusive little girl, and Garfield, while impersonating some dogs, gets caught by the dogcatcher. He escapes, and decides to find work, joining Binky the Clown's circus. After a hard day of work, Garfield quits, and Odie, disguised as a clown, goes with him. An old lady takes the two in to the same pet shop Garfield was adopted from.

Jon gives up, but Liz tells Jon not to, kissing him. With restored confidence, Jon keeps looking, and finds Garfield and Odie in the pet store. He adopts them once again and they go home. Months later, Garfield and Odie are best friends, Jon and Liz are in a relationship, and life is good once again.

In a post credits scene, Garfield attacks Herman Post, the mailman.
