This film was based on an early fiction story Elliot Strange wrote when he was in college. Strange wanted to make a film adaptation of this story while he was still working at Vestron Pictures, but he was unable to obtain financial support, and he felt that he couldn't pull off elements in his story properly with the lack of believable effects that films from the late 80s/early 90s had to work with.
Strange intended to retire after his final show (at the time) She-Line ended, but he was soon approached by Randall Emmett, one of his previous colleagues, who decided to help him produce one final film. After showing him his idea, Emmett decided to help him fund the project and they hired Relativity Media to distribute it. With Relativity Media providing financial support, Strange felt assured that his vision would go untampered.
This film is dedicated to John Vernon, an actor who previously appeared on (what is) Film, which Strange worked on. Lyla Lycan is also a statement towards Disney's Brother Bear, which stands as Strange's most hated film.

The film received generally positive reviews from critics, earning a 85% Certified Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with the consensus stating "Goes beyond the cliched werewolf story, and fancies a beautiful story that will be immortalized." On Metacritic, the film has a 70 out of 100, indicitaitng generally positive reviews.
